New World Release Date, Closed Beta and Everything We Know

Unlike closed beta tests for other games, Amazon Games confirmed that testers will not be required to agree to an NDA. This means they will be allowed to stream “New World” content

There's a lot of pressure on New World. The early modern fantasy MMO is Amazon's latest attempt to develop a PC hit, something the tech giant has had a tough time of so far: competitive shooter Crucible released, unreleased, and then was canceled, and multiplayer brawler Breakaway was canceled before leaving alpha.

New World has always seemed like the Amazon game that's most likely to succeed, though. In part, that's because of its sensible design and scope. The past decade has seen a wave of Kickstarter-backed MMOs with huge promises: EVE Online-like levels of intrigue, with bustling dynamic worlds entirely run by players. Here's everything we know about New World:

New World' closed beta starts in July

Amazon has been gathering feedback from a select group of people through alpha testing that restarted last October. The good news, though, is the closed beta testing for “New World” is currently set to begin a month ahead of the game’s official launch.

The “New World” closed beta testing will start on July 20 unless, but video game fans can now apply to become a tester through an official signup page using their Amazon accounts. This is one of the two ways gamers can get an early peek into the anticipated MMO, but it does not guarantee them a slot for the next stage of beta testing. In an FAQ page, the developer says invitations will be sent “randomly” based on the list of individuals who registered.

The other option, which will certainly let fans join closed beta, is to pre-order “New World” Deluxe Edition on Steam and Amazon. One of the bonus items included will be a “secure access” to the testing that starts in July.

Unlike closed beta tests for other games, Amazon Games confirmed that testers will not be required to agree to an NDA. This means they will be allowed to stream “New World” content, which is also good news for every video game fan because they get to see how gameplay features and how well the game looks before they decide to purchase it.

Release DateNew World is currently planned to launch in the Spring of 2021. It was originally slated for May and then August of last year, but feedback from beta players convinced Amazon to push it back further and add more content.

“We want to ensure that the most dedicated players have plenty of middle and endgame experiences as they venture through Aeternum. We want our players to feel completely immersed in the game, and know that our studio stands for quality and lasting gameplay you can trust—and that means added time to get things where we want them before we fully release,” studio director Rich Lawrence wrote.

New World’s official beta will be available at some point later in 2021 along with the full game only on Microsoft Windows. Those who preordered got to play the full version of New World (as it currently stood) for a limited time window in the summer of 2020.

New World Planet Trailer

Amazon Game Studios has released one New World trailer to date. Said trailer was premiered in December 2019 during The Game Awards.

Expository in nature, it drops players into a world where reality and fantasy meet in a fictionalized depiction of America as the island of Aeternum during the 17th century, located off the coast of the continent in the Atlantic Ocean.

Good and evil clash. Ancient and new butt heads. All in the name of esoteric power. Battle ensues between former settlers turned red-eyed living dead, towering lucifers and legendary creatures, and living men drawn by the corrupting promise of immortality.

It’s heavy stuff but hints at a game tapping solidly into the roots of the MMORPG genre. As studio Patrick Gilmore puts it, New World is ‘a garden of Eden that has fallen from grace.’

New World Gamepaly

Since New World has been delayed, we’ve had a few glimpses at its development over the last few months. The MMORPG is set in the mid-1600s and players are expected to colonize a fictional land called Aeternum Island which is based on colonial America.

Players will be expected to compete for territories over a period of time, levelling up their character in the process. As players earn more experience and master more weapons, they’ll have to overcome difference challenges in Aeternum, some of which might require you to team up with friends online.

To do that, players can join Guilds – or as they’re known in New World, companies – allowing you to develop chunks of the landscape into big towns. Through this process, players will be able to purchase houses, which act as fast travel points, but beware: settlements can be attacked by rival companies.

There are also countless expeditions to experience in New World. These are quests that will provide unique bits of gear, like armour and weapons, for you and your friends to use.
